A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
